  • Will my child become a bully?
Through our work, we have seen that confident kids make kinder kids. We teach children how to not only stand up to bullies for themselves, but how to stand up for others. Our Rules of Engagement teach children to avoid the fight if at all possible by first using their words, and then telling an adult. When they do need to resort to physical self-defence, we do not teach children punches or kicks our kids martial arts lessons, but rather, empowered by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, to neutralise, defend, control, and negotiate if possible. we teach your kids verbal strategies to deter bullies and, as a last resort, non-violent techniques to keep them safe if physically assaulted.

  • My child has ADHD. Will martial arts help? . Is Jiu-Jitsu for them?
Yes! One of the great things about kids martial arts near me is that it’s an individual sport done in a group environment. We find all our students improve in their focus, self-control, discipline, and social skills. But the best part is that They don’t even realise that is what our highly trained martial arts instructors are doing. They just think they are having fun! The best way to find out for yourself is to take advantage of our limited time offer. You’ll find our team so helpful and dedicated to helping your child become the best version of themselves. If you are concerned about group classes for your child, we also offer private classes until they feel ready to take on the group class setting!
  • Kids karate classes vs. kids BJJ classes. Which is best?
Many parents ask, what’s the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and karate classes? While we believe all martial arts have value, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Self-defence has not only been proven to be the most effective martial art for a smaller person to defend themselves in a real fight for nearly a century, it also can be the most gentle. We don’t want our kids or students turning into bullies themselves, and we also believe self-defence should be scalable, depending on the situation. Whereas kids karate lessons or Taekwondo classes rely solely on landing punches and kicks, Jiu-Jitsu for kids focuses on neutralising a threat with verbal boundaries, distance management, body control, and eventual negotiation.
  • Are parents allowed to watch?
We encourage parents to watch their children in their kids Self-defence martial arts classes. We love parents getting involved! Even better you can join in our Self-defence classes for adults and have yet another thing in common with your little one. We love seeing the bond of families who train together!
  • My child is not athletic. Will they feel left out?
We believe Jiu-Jitsu is for children of all skill levels and abilities. Your child belongs here. Through our kids Self-defence classes, we have seen our students improve coordination, balance, motor skills, focus, and discipline. Plus, they make lots of great friends! Our instructors are highly skilled in teaching martial arts for kids. It’s their passion!
  • Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for women?
Absolutely! Specifically, because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Self defence has proven reliable in defending against larger opponents for nearly a century, it is the perfect martial art for women. Many women train in our co-ed Gracie Combatives classes; however, we also have women-only classes available if that is preferred. We love seeing the physical confidence develop in our female students as they gain self-defence skills on the mat!
  • I have no experience. What should I do to prepare?
Just show up! Upon arriving, you will be given a focused introductory lesson by one of our instructors before you join in the group class. No previous experience is necessary for any one of our group classes, so you will never feel left behind. Our program is structured by class number (15 group classes), so you will always know exactly what techniques you will be learning on any given day. You could even check out the techniques of the day on GracieUniversity.com before class to get a head start!
  • I hate doing gym workouts, I find them boring. Will this be similar?
Definitely not! Our students are often so into the class and learning the techniques, that it’s only after the class that they realize they worked up a sweat! The variety, challenge and the feeling of accomplishment when you master a self-defence skill or technique is why students love our classes at Ranges Gracie Jiu Jitsu. But we find it’s the friendships and fun that keep students coming back. It’s like their second family. Why not find out for yourself? Book in for our limited time offer on this page!
  • I am a survivor of past violence. What if I have a trauma response during a class?
First of all, we want to recognize your courage in seeking self-defence training. For many of our students, jiu-jitsu was the missing component of their healing process from past trauma. If you are looking for self-defence as a means to re-establish your power and feeling of safety, it is especially important that you find a supportive, safe, and self-paced training environment. This is why Women Empowered was created. We recognize everyone in our classes has a different history, which is why all of our instructors are certified in taking a trauma-informed approach to our martial arts classes. If a student does experience a trigger in class, we first want them to know that it is a normal, human response. We will support them in whatever way they wish to be supported, while giving them the space they may need to feel re-cantered. We always encourage our students to go at their own pace and with what they only confutable with, even if that means not participating in certain techniques until they feel ready. We would be honoured to support you on your journey, and hope to see you on our mats soon!
  • I’m not very sporty or coordinated. Will that be a problem?
Not at all. In fact, many students starting in our adult Self-defence classes may have described themselves like that before they started. There is absolutely no experience necessary for any of our beginner classes. You will fit right in! Give yourself some time, and you will be astounded at what your body is capable of, and how much you can improve! WHAT PEOPLE SAY

5star.webp

Ranges Gracie is a wonderful place to learn Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Amos is a fantastic teacher and extremely generous with his time, ensuring that everyone leaves class feeling confident and with a good understanding of the techniques. He has established a great culture and everyone there is easy to train with.

As for the techniques themselves, they are really fun to learn and the context for performing each move is always made clear. The way the curriculum is structured means that once you attend a few classes you will see how they all fit together, meaning that once you finish the course you will be able to transition from one position to the next with ease. Highly recommended!
